Simple Steps to Cut Your Energy Costs

Beyond tracking your usage with the app, here are some actionable steps you can take today to help control your energy bills and maximize your savings:

  • Optimize Your Thermostat: Program your thermostat to maximize energy savings. Setting your thermostat just one degree lower when heating or one degree higher when cooling can reduce energy use by up to 5 percent.

  • Air-Dry Dishes: Utilize the air-dry setting on your dishwasher or simply open the door after the cycle finishes. This step alone can cut your dishwasher's energy use by up to 50 percent.

  • Rethink Laundry Habits: Always do full loads of laundry and wash with cold water. Using warm water instead of hot can cut a load's energy use in half, and using cold water will save even more energy.

  • Switch to LEDs: Substitute conventional light bulbs for LEDs. Lighting can amount to up to 12 percent of monthly energy use, and LED bulbs can cut lighting costs by as much as 75 percent.

  • Unplug 'Vampire' Electronics: Unplug appliances and electronics when they're not in use. Small appliances (like chargers, toasters, and coffee makers) and electronics (game consoles, TVs) continue to draw power even when powered off. This "vampire draw" can be responsible for up to 12 percent of your energy use.
