Attention City of Stonecrest SSEMC Members: City of Stonecrest Announces New Franchise Fee

Stonecrest Sign

The City of Stonecrest recently implemented a franchise fee ordinance for EMC members living within its city limits. Beginning September 1, 2017, a 4% fee will be added to your bill based on your total electricity charges for the month and before other taxes. This fee is to be collected by SSEMC on a monthly basis and 100% of those collections will be remitted to the City. As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, Snapping Shoals EMC strives to set fair, cost-based rates for the members that we serve. We continually strive to keep rates as low as possible for all SSEMC members and are proud of the fact that we are one of the lowest cost electric utility providers in the state. We encourage you to review the most recent Georgia Public Service Commission Electric Summer Rate Survey (http://www.psc.state.ga.us/electric/surveys/residentialrs.asp). According to this survey, a SSEMC member who uses a typical 1,500 kwh/month enjoys a savings of $50.74 per month over a Georgia Power consumer with the same usage.

We often get questions about how Georgia Power handles franchise fees. ALL Georgia Power customers living inside of city limits are directly assessed a 2.9989% fee based on their most recent "Municipal Franchise Fee Schedule: MFF-5". Further, ALL Georgia Power customers living outside of the city limits, or cities without an active franchise fee agreement, are assessed a 1.1525% fee times usage revenue. It is our understanding that Georgia Power will ultimately pay the city of Stonecrest the same 4% franchise fee that SSEMC collects.

If you have any questions or need further information regarding the franchise fee process, please call Assistant City Manager, Mr. Plex A. Joyner, at 770-224-0202.
